1000he screen replacement

NOTE: Click on the thumbnails for larger images.
IMPORTANT UPDATE:  My  screen didn’t have a legible part number, which turns out to be HSD100IFW1, manufactured by HannStar. Google that part number; it is available from several suppliers. The RunPDA screen works but as noted has a slight fit issue; it sits a bit high, obscuring the top row of pixels.

SECOND UPDATE: By request I have added detail pages for the touchpad cable removal and re-insertion and for the keyboard cable removal and re-insertion.

  1. Wow that looks complicated. Im not looking forward to tackling this, but I feel a bit more confident with your description. I invisioned something less complicated Thanks for providing poictures.

    • Just take your time and keep everything organized, Mike. It’s not as bad as at it looks at first glance, I deliberately chose to over-document the process! ;)

  2. Thanks so much for the in-depth walkthrough. One question, if I may- where did you find a replacement screen for your 1000HE? I cracked mine this morning and I’ve been looking for a supplier to no avail. Did you order direct from asus?

    • You’re welcome, JD. I got the replacement screen from a company called RunPDA on eBay, just search for “1000HE screen”; they’re new, not refurbished (“Buy it now”). They come from Taiwan and cost just under $80 plus $18 shipping. The company provides a tracking number but I barely had a chance to use it – it arrived in less than a week! Pretty good going from the Far Orient I’d say.

Now, I have noticed that the new screen sits very slightly higher than the old one, so that the top row of pixels is partly obscured by the screen bezel. It’s the kind of thing most people would never notice (took me a while) and not worry about if they did, but I’m sometimes a little finicky. The screen itself works flawlessly, this is a minor fit issue.

I don’t know whether it’s just mine or if it would affect all such screens, and I haven’t yet redone the disassembly/reassembly process to see if it’s just a matter of re-seating screws and so forth. It’s barely noticeable anyway, so I haven’t been in a hurry to redo the process, just thought I’d mention it.

  3. Thank you so much for this. Saved me lots of money. :) The most difficult part for me was getting the keyboard back in — I ended up having to give it a second shot since it wasn’t fully functional the first time. I think I lost the page zoom in/out function on the touchpad, too, but that was something that annoyed the hell out of me anyway. I also noticed that the placement of the screen was slightly “off”, but as you said, it’s barely noticable.

Again, thank you for the specific documentation!!

  4. Great instructions – my *idiot* wife, litterally 10 minutes ago, threw a pair of scisors to me (yeah, I asked for them) and instead of throwing them onto the coffee table next to me tried to land them in my lap – of course they bounced and put a small, but very noticable, scratch in my screen.

    • Oh, bummer! Perhaps if it’s shallow enough you can buff it out with one of those CD repair kits?

  5. Hadn’t thought of trying that. Good suggestion – I think it’s a bit deep though – if you drag a fingernail across the screen you can actually feel the depth of the scratch.

Stuopid thing is a new screen on eBay is %$85US plus postage (around $110 AUD I think), from the company I bought the laptop I can get it for $149AUD), but bloody ASUS want $350AUD for it – they will only supply and fit. When I asked why so expensive I get “That’s just what we charge”

    • Yes, I got a similar response from ASUS, except it took half an hour before they would even commit on the phone to $300 for the repair. Three quarters the price of a new netbook! Absurd.

Good luck with the scratched screen, and do drop a comment here saying how it worked out.

      • Price of the 1000HE here in Australia is $749, and that is upgraded to 2Gb RAM – some people are selling them online for around the $500o mark. I’ll probably get one from ebay when I find another job.

  6. I just found your site while trying to find info on how to do exactly what you did – thanks! Just ordered my replacement screen, and I look forward to following your directions. Did you experience any loss of functionality with the webcam or microphone?

    • Hmmm, missed this when you posted it. I did not lose any functionality, hope you didn’t either!

  7. Thank you very much for this posting. Descriptive, useful and fun! You save me the grief of paying 200 CAD to repair my Asus and/or buy a new one for 350 CAD (absurd!). Everything worked like a charm. Just a note: when placing cover, you have to be careful with the mic cable that can get in the way of the power button :P .

The only thing that I change is that instead of Bushmills I celebrated with “Te Bheag”. Try it, you might like it.

  8. Great instructions – saved me a lot of money. Thanks a lot mate!!!

  9. I wanted to thank you for putting this up. I had a 1000HE LCD that was getting worse and worse (couldn’t see 20% of the screen), now I have a new one for $100. The monitor is great, but I did mess up the touchpad cable (look up ZIF sockets for a flat flexible cable (FFC) to see how to properly release the latches if you don’t know how already, which I did not). The monitor is nice, but these directions are more detailed and the thoroughness is greatly appreciated, I wouldn’t have been able to do it without this.

    • Glad it was helpful! This kind of thing is nerve-wracking at best, so I tried to be as detailed as possible. I’m pleased that it’s been of use to so many people.

  10. Thanks so much! I did it all by myself and I’m a teenage girl.

Only problems I had were trying to figure out how to release the keyboard cable and fitting the camera cable back in when replacing the bezel.

Oh and you didn’t say to unscrew all the screws on the back so I had to do that before the bezel came off. Ha

    Thanks again! Eeethan is fixed!

    • Que? I listed every screw! :D

I’ll admit it’s hard to show exactly how to release some of those little cable catches though.

Anyway, glad Eeethan’s all better now!

  11. “Now, I have noticed that the new screen sits very slightly higher than the old one, so that the top row of pixels is partly obscured by the screen bezel”

I replaced my screen and I have noticed the same problem. Did you figure out a solution yet?

PS Thanks for the great instructions!

    • Not an easy one. If you take out the screen frame bars (yeah, pretty much the entire disassembly process again) you can use a small rattail file to slightly extend the smaller screw hole allowing you to reposition the screen a millimeter or so.

Is it worth that amount of effort? Probably not, but it depends how much it bothers you.

  12. Thanks very much for the pictures and instructions. I probably wouldn’t have attempted it on my own. Replacing the screen was no problem. I scored lots of points with the wife, who now has her netbook back in working condition.

  13. I have to say a big thank you for your guide. It couldn’t be more easy after this. And yes my screen too sits higher as you mention.

  14. Thank you so much, B.T. Murtagh. I followed your instructions to the letter. Your walkthrough saved me over $200 and probably about a month of being without my netbook.

For any other novice users, here’s a warning about the keyboard and touchpad connectors: only the paper-y ribbon parts come out. The plastic piece between the terminal is a retainer, whose ends pull out away from the apparatus just enough to let the paper cable loose.

  15. First off I’d like to say great instructions !!! But I don’t understand why you completely disassembled your netbook to change out the screen . To change out the screen all you have to do is take out the bezel screws , pry out the bezel , unscrew the screen , unplug the screen , then put the new screen in . Please don’t think I’m trying to be a smart ass . Just thought you might want to know you don’t have to mess with the keyboard or the touch pad .
And there’s lots of places that have the proper screen that will fit better . You can google the SN on the back of the screen . It’s ” HSD100IFW1 ” , made by HannStar .
Owe and I celebrated with Johnny Walker Black Label . :-)

  16. Thanks mate, your great manual helped me to fixe my 1000HE by my self. And I’m really not handy with computers!! Cheers! Grtz. Lucas

  17. I agree with Jason Hopkins. I just did this repair on my 1000HE and I couldn’t believe that I had to disassemble the whole thing. I just went for the bezel screws and it only took a little bit of jiggling to get it off. It helps if you tilt the screen all the way back before starting. This makes the repair a lot faster.

  18. Guys, I am by no means claiming that the method I used is the fastest. You may well have success with a shortened version that doesn’t completely disassemble the netbook but uses a bit of jiggling to free the screen at an earlier stage. I’m a bit more patient, a bit less daring and prefer the way I did it here; I’ve successfully replaced three screens this way now, mine (the one pictured) and two others, with no damage to the units involved.

I do suggest anyone doing this follow Jason’s lead and search for the exact part, though; mine didn’t have a legible part number on it. I expect there may be minor differences depending upon exactly when and where your netbook was manufactured, so your first step should be to look for a part number on the broken screen itself. As I said, I had to do a bit of refitting to get the one I bought to fit perfectly.

  19. Agreed – to replace the screen, you do not have to disassemble the entire netbook – that is just asking for problems.

Start at”remove screen bezel screw ” stage – thanks very much for all the detailed instructions, tho, it was very helpful. Found a new screen on ebay easily, shipped from Hong Kong in 10 days.

  20. Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. I followed the sequence as you presented it. Replaced a screen and a keyboard at the same time (one key cap was missing and it was less than hygienic). 100% success! Found an exact replacement keyboard for something like $10 shipped, so it’s almost like a new netbook.

  21. Thanks for this – made swapping out my LCD much easier!

  22. HUGE THANKS! I broke the screen of my girlfriend 1000H (and bought her another one right away) about a year ago and never could accept to pay around 160euros, so it was just sitting there taking dust. Until i found your page, a great step by step that decided me to go ahead and change the screen myself. So got my screen this morning, mounted it, and now i’m writing this post from my newly fixed 1000H. Huge thanks again!

  23. Thanks for the instructions. I have just changed my screen and was very disappointed to find that it doesn’t align correctly with the bezel. Some of the screen is missing on top and there is about 1.5 mm of black across the bottom. I was just looking in the video control panel for a way to move the screen like you can on a desktop and I can’t find it. I am surprised because I ordered the screen from RUNPDA as you did and you seemed happy with yours.

    • Sorry mate, I did note the fit issue and there is a correction in the comments; my screen didn’t have a legible part number, which turns out to be HSD100IFW1, manufactured by HannStar.

I’ll add that information in a more obvious location – doesn’t help you now, I know, and I do apologize but this isn’t my normal gig. Maybe you can return it? Otherwise I did manage to get a better fit by taking a rat-tail file to the holes in the screen holding bars, extending them downward a bit.

  24. Thank you for the instructions. Only thing missing is that there are two more screws on the bottom than you listed– they are on each side of the battery compartment. It took me about 2 hours to go through this whole thing, but I was 100% successful, and the laptop is good as new. I hope I never have to do that again!

  25. I disagree with almost every political view I’ve seen on your site, but this EeePC guide was incredibly helpful. My sister-in-law can now put the extra $200+ she was saving to replace her system towards her living expenses at college next month.

For anyone needing to follow this, LaptopScreen1 on eBay is based out of Texas (USA) and had me a HannStar screen in under 3 days for a flat fee of $75.00 (shipping included). The only difference was that my screen was Rev 0 -A00, and the replacement was Rev 0 – A02. Works perfectly.

    • I’m glad it helped and thanks for the specific source review for the screen. Best wishes to your sister in law, college is expensive enough!

  26. Just used this guide to replace an engineers lappy once he “dropped” the machine.

This is an absolutely fantastic step by step guide. Thank you so much for making this easy to understand.

This has saved my life. Thanks very much for this one sir.

    This has made my weekend.

    • You’re welcome! I just tried to give the level of detail I always want to have myself.

  27. THANK YOU for this fantastic description! It was not the first I found but was the BEST I found!

I did what Jason Hopkins suggested – I didn’t open the keyboard half of my 1000he. The trickiest part was realizing to bend out the curved part of the screen bezel so that it would release from the keyboard part. The whole replacement process took me about 30 minutes.

I bought my replacement screen from eBay. I did a search on 1000he LCD screen. I found three offers at $55, including shipping. I took one that was 50 cents more but was located in NJ, near where I live in MD. That paid off. I ordered Thursday, the screen was delivered Saturday by USPS.

I do have the same problem with the screen fit. It’s not worth it right now to disassemble, file, and reassemble, but that would solve the problem. As is, what I don’t see is mostly title bars of windows, and so no functionality is lost here.

Warning – the screen bezel is very delicate; I cracked mine above the camera. Fortunately, there was no hit on functionality here, either.

Thank you again! I may use your site again to upgrade the hard drive and/or replace the fan (which went through a period of being extremely noisy, but has been quiet the last couple of months).

    • The delicacy of the screen bezel is why I prefer a complete disassembly, rather than trying to bend it outward.

  28. Thanks for such thorough instructions. I did a complete disassemble of the machine to get the part number, ordered the screen, and once my screen arived I reassembled the netbook in about an hour and a half. It’s as good as new.

  29. thanks so fuckin’ much! perfect f’n instructions. time for a fuckin’ cocktail!!! bee-oooothch!

  30. Hi! Your procedures was simply beatiful!!
    Thank you a lot.

At first, I tried to change my screen by shorter way, but I felt I was going to break something, so a followed step by step your instructions (even the “prepare for result” one hehehe).

Yeap, a couple of screws are remaining to be refered on it, in the back of case.

I bought the screen in Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Screen-1000HE-1000HD-1000HA-HSD100IFW1/dp/B004Y6FFGU/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1304183202&sr=8-11) for my 1000HE.

I´m a kind of sad, because searching for some procedure, I noted it is in the market a TOUCH SCREEN for Asus EEE PC 1000He for around 90$ :(

    Thank you agaaaaaaain!!!

  31. Great detailed walkthrough! Replacing my cracked display was a piece of cake, following your instructions.

BTW: I bought my display in an online shop on ebay.de. Original display; works like a charm.

    THANKS A LOT!!!

  32. Thanks, guided me through brilliantly

  33. My daughter stood on my wife’s 1000he last week and broke the screen. Finding this guide gave me enough confidence to spend £40 on a screen from ebay to repair it.

All was going well until I tried to remove the keyboard. Whatever I did it wouldn’t come out. Reading through other comments here I realised that removing the keyboard wasn’t necessary. So focusing on the screen, I soon had the old screen out and a new one in place.

One surprise was the screen bought on ebay is a glossy one. Luckily my wife prefers this so she is happy. Thanks for taking the time to write this guide. Much appreciated.

    • The keyboard is a little tricky, as you have to get quite a lot of tiny little latches loose at the same time. As you say, as long as you’re willing to take your chances with bending the bezel a bit it isn’t strictly necessary, just a little safer. I’m glad it worked out for you!

  34. Fantastic resource. Made replacement a breeze. You also helped make me a hero — my 12 year old daughter was heartbroken when she dropped and cracked the screen on her ASUS. Thanks to your careful and thorough attention to detail, she is back in business.

  35. thanks.!! the hannstar monitor fits perfectly. walkthrough made it a snap. the bezel is much easier to get off if you pry from the inside and not the outside. my 13yo will be able to use her eee again :)

  36. Just finished replacing my screen, thank you. I also skipped most of the disassembly. After hours trying to snap the bezel back on, I realized I had the screen frame bars reversed; if you see the right side of the monitor sticking out when trying to place the bezel, check this.

  37. Brilliant, just used this to replace the screen on a 1000H, instructions spot on.
