Canada or US: Who likes their health care more?

The most common bogeyman thrown up by public-option opponents is that it could, sometime way down the road, evolve into a single-payer system like Canada has. How dissatisfied with their health care are Canadians, compared with Americans? McClatchy has a new poll out that offers some insight:

* It depends partly on how much you make:

70 percent of Canadians making more than $55,000 said they had access to all the care they needed at costs they could afford, compared to 61 percent of those who earn less than $55,000.

60 percent of Americans making more than $50,000 said they had access to all the care they needed at costs they could afford, compared to 37 percent of those who earn less than $50,000.

* It also depends on whether you have chronic health problems:

69 percent of Canadians (of all income levels) with chronic conditions are satisfied with the accessibility and quality of their care, 63 percent of those without chronic conditions are satisfied.

59 percent of Americans (of all income levels) with chronic conditions are satisfied with the accessibility and quality of their care, 50 percent of those without chronic conditions are satisfied.

* Overall, Canadians are more satisfied than Americans with the availability and affordability of their health care:

Overall, 65 percent of Canadians said they had access to all the health care services they needed at costs they could afford.

Overall, 49 percent of Americans said they had access to all the health care services they needed at costs they could afford.

*   Canadians do feel less satisfied with waiting times than Americans:

59 percent of Americans said they could see their GPs without long waits;
47 percent of Americans said they can see specialists without long waits;
44 percent of Americans said they have good weekend/evening access.

52 percent of Canadians said they could see their GPs without long waits;
26 percent of Canadians said they can see specialists without long waits;
43 percent of Canadians said they have good weekend/evening access.
