Too weird to wait for Friday…
PUDUCHERRY: In a bizarre ritual, two minor girls, both seven, from the remote Pallipudupet village in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district were married off to frogs on Friday night. The ceremony, an annual feature during the Pongal (harvest) festival, is conducted “to prevent the outbreak of mysterious diseases in the village”.
Perhaps this is a fossil cultural remnant of a treaty from back when the Frog Princes were a real threat to humans with their superior biological warfare capabilities?
Religion! You do have to grant that it has some entertainment value.
By the sound of it, though, these people put a lot of effort and expense into this, expense and effort that might more profitably be poured into public health systems.
Those also tend to prevent the outbreak of mysterious diseases in villages.
