All About Oil? Yes, But Some Of It Snake

There’s a good op-ed by Frank Rich in The New York Times, well argued and highly linky, which the inestibable PZ Myers is currently featuring on Pharyngula.

Among other things Rich links to the devastating expose in GQ Magazine of how intimately the evangelical religion of George Bush was implicated in the commission of the evil stupidity of the Iraq War.

Each of the Briefings has a Bible verse prominently displayed on it, obviously chosen to exhort our former President into continuing his illegal war (each link should take you to a picture of a cover, or see them all at once here):

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? (excerpt from) Isiah 6:8

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Psalm 139:9-10

Their arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent; their horses’ hoofs are reckoned as the flint, and their wheels as a whirlwind. Isaiah 5:28

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:13-14

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be
discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.
(Joshua 1:9)

It is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 1 Peter 2:15

Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith. Isaiah 26:2

Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared & wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote… This is what the words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign & brought it to an end. Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales & found wanting. Peres: Your kingsdom is divided... Daniel 5:5-28

The king is not saved by a mighty army; A warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, To deliver their soul from death. Psalm 33:16-19

Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually. 1 Chron 16:11

Don’t ever let anyone try to claim that this war was not at least in part a Crusade in the minds of the batshit evangelical Christians who are even now firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of our military, and despite some improvement still a major force in our civilian government too.
